THE BOY WHO NEVER...
This project was based on J.M.Barrie's, Peter Pan. The theme was suggested by one of our members and, as usual with TVYT, quickly ran away with itself into an exciting new area. Well, a rubbish dump, to be exact.
You can read more about what everyone got up to in BOARD TREADER's blog at the bottom of this page.
The play followed the journey of two young people, Peter and Bella, who find themselves trapped in a place called Neverland (the dump for unwanted things) following arguments with their respective parents.
They soon meet the two groups of inhabitants of the dump:
The Scavengers - a family-like group who live off any scraps they can find, including one young man, called Bill, who has befriended a can of beans, Heinz, and takes him everywhere, constantly defending him from being eaten by the others.
The P'rates - a gang of thugs, led by a very young Jamed Hook, who collect rent from the Scavengers, steal their food and give them beatings for fun.
Peter is quickly adopted by the P'rates and begins training to be like them, although consistently protesting that he "just wants to be alone". Bella takes a different turn, following the Scavengers around until one of them protects her from a gang of P'rates before taking her to meet his family group.
Eventually when one too many arguments have broken out, the two groups take part in a therapy session which, once again, ends in an argument. The P'rates suggest that they settle things with a game of dodgeball, which the Scanvengers win. The young James Hook does not like to be beaten and stomps about with his dummy in his mouth before telling everyone. "I want to go home." One by one everyone remembers something that they miss from home and that it "was never that bad" - and leave together talking of new friendships and working together to find a way home.
Peter, however, gets his final wish, left on stage to scavenge alone.
