TVYT's first ever Play in a week (PIAW) with ... SAND!! Yes a little bit crazy, but ultimately, an effective way to invite our audience into the dystopian world of The Birds Stop To Listen.
The cast was made up of 15 young people aged 10-15, half of whom had never before taken part in a TVYT PIAW, and that is an exciting first.
Inspired by Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games, The Birds Stop To Listen is a commentary on: tyrannical governments; global warming;utopian dreams turning into dystopian nightmares; competition culture; and technological advancements. Yes, we were quite impressed by the level of thinking that they were doing too...
The Birds Stop To Listen begins with the audience entering to see a young person tied to a stool in the middle of a caged pit of sand.
The audience were welcome as esteemed guests; the lucky 1% of their district to have gained enough points to board The ARC for it's escape from their dying world, to Earth's twin planet, XH-17. They only had one decision left to make... who would be the final 3 chosen to join them and who would be left behind on their dying home planet?
As each Subject entered the arena we saw exercises that tested the Subjects' strength, teamwork, senses and physiological stability. Some gained points on their chips but some ultimately failed. The ARC said goodbye to friends and family to set off on their glorious adventure to a new life, while the rest of us are here... waiting for the world to finally turn her back on us.
